Farm Fresh Spotlight: The Royal Dairy
While Washington State may better known for its apples than its dairy farms, its milk producers are certainly worth celebrating. Royal Dairy, nestled in the Columbia Basin in Grant County is leading the nation with its commitment to becoming a zero-waste dairy. They were recently awarded the 2018 Outstanding Dairy Farm Sustainability Award by the Innovation Center for U.S.Dairy for becoming the first dairy farmers in Washington to install a water treatment system that uses worms to transform the dairy’s wastewater into irrigation-grade water. The Allred family were able to turn one of the farm’s biggest liabilities, wastewater, into a profitable asset. The worms’ process to clean the water generates about 2,000 cubic yards of worm casting every 18 months that can be sold to other local farmers to fortify their soil for apples, bell peppers, cherries and other produce. This supports Royal Dairy’s mission to keep the environment clean, keep their cows happy and produce an essential, natural ingredient for nutritious living.
